Space Work

A Found-sound Tone Poem

Space Work is an original music composition created to accompany and amplify field recordings taken in public spaces around New York City. The sites range from large parks to street corners. The recordings, along with photographs taken in synchronization, inspired the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic choices made while composing the music, the process for which involved improvisation, iteration, and collage. The piece aims to show how sound, both concrete and abstract, can evoke space and how the visual and aural are equally impactful on our environmental experience.
